How can I get rid of the check engine light after removing the catalytic converter.?

I have removed the catalytic converter from my truck and get a lot more power but now I am getting a check engine light that says my system is running lean. How can I correct this problem? How can I get rid of the check engine light after removing the catalytic converter.?
install a new catalytic converter.
The OBD is what causes the check engine light to turn on. It is the on board diagnostics chip which is mandatory in all vehicles after 1988 by emissions regulations. Your check engine light came on when you remover the catalytic converter because your vehicle is now creating more emissions than it is legally allowed to produce. You can temporarily turn it off by removing the battery cables for a few minutes and them putting them back on, however within 25 miles it will be back on. The catalytic converter might make difference in power, however it was put on there by emissions regulations to lower emissions in the air because of the global warming b.s. and all the "tree huggers" who want to save the world from us. lol The catalytic converter actually has a good purpose if you want cleaner air because it converts Hydrocarbons, Carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide (produced by your engine) into less harmful things like carbon dioxide(what you exhale) and water. By the way, it will not pass smog without the catalytic converter or if the check engine light is on and if you are caught driving it without the catalytic converter, they can tow your vehicle and fine you out the wazoo so be cautious. Good luck! How can I get rid of the check engine light after removing the catalytic converter.?
put the cat back in for sure. your car is not designed to run without one. You are polluting intentionally. you might as well dump a bag of garbage in lake tahoe. Put it back in and take time to realize that the slight power increase isnt worth your sensors going out and your computer freaking out. Your car is going to adjust for the cat being missing and will run your engine really hot.
un hook your battery for about an hour, my house heat vent blows on my car an resets the sensors (oxygen-fuel air, exhaust) all the time . I hope this helps, its gotta be at least 45 min though-- it takes the on board computer that long to erase it self---also anything newer than 1979 has an on board computerHow can I get rid of the check engine light after removing the catalytic converter.?
Reinstall the Catalytic converter, you are making more noise, which you are mistaking for more power. The new honeycomb type converters don't provide any significant exhaust restriction. Old myths from the days of pellet type converters die hard though.
your car must have an oxygen sensor after the catalytic coverter, unplug that oxygen sensor, and reprogram your ecu

What do I do if the diagnostic test say bad tranmission and bad catalytic converter?

Could I just get the catalytic converter fix and get the transmission later? The car right just not getting any power but it changing gears well. What do I do if the diagnostic test say bad tranmission and bad catalytic converter?
Replace the catalytic converter and go to a shop to see whats up with the transmission. You may just need to replace a component in the transmission and not the whole thing. Transmissions are very expensive, so if you don't want to spend a lot of money, look at trying to get it fix first. What do I do if the diagnostic test say bad tranmission and bad catalytic converter?
If it revs up when you press the pedal down while in gear, but doesn't seem to accelerate as quickly as it should, then that's the transmission slipping. A bad catalytic converter can rob power too, but I haven't had any personal experience of one going bad. I've heard that when their bad the exhaust get a kind of rotten egg smell.

Transmission repair/replacement is very expensive. A lot of the times it costs more than the car is worth, so if your transmission is going out, start thinking about getting a different car (unless you really like the car and want to fix it up).

Replacement of a catalytic converter shouldn't be too expensive. Should only take a garage something like 1 hour to replace it, assuming the rest of your exhaust is in ok condition, so labor shouldn't be much. What do I do if the diagnostic test say bad tranmission and bad catalytic converter?
If you need to pass a emissions test yes you have to replace catalytic converter. The tranny, if you don't mind getting stranded somewhere and can afford a tow truck, don't fix it. Your playing the game of risk. Don't go anywhere farther than 30 miles from your house. Use the car for work and necessities. Is it even worth fixing anyways? If you owe money on it then you should probably look into fixing it!

GL
What diagnostic test are you using?..... I need to sell that one. I would make so much money on repairing your all's cars..........I would get a REAL test done by a reputable place before you spend any more money.

Is it safe to drive my mid '90s car with a broken catalytic converter? Will it keep running?

All of a sudden I couldn't get my 1995 Ford Taurus to go 35mph with the pedal to the floor! My mechanic says I need a new catalytic converter, but the cost of such an item (plus labor) is prohibitive right now.The car still runs. If I stay off the highway and just make short trips (and try to stay out of everyone else's way) is it safe to drive the car and would it continue to operate indefinitely with the broken down item?Is it safe to drive my mid '90s car with a broken catalytic converter? Will it keep running?
Not a good idea. Sometimes you NEED extra power to avoid a collision.

Remember that most converter failures are the result of some OTHER malfunction which is allowing unburned fuel into the converter.

Get THAT problem fixed TOO or you will burn up ANOTHER converter.
Your engine is designed for unleaded the converter reignites the gases for emissions control of exhaust. It is ok to drive it without one indefinitly but the epa frowns on it and so do some states. Check online for a aftermarket one or go to the junkyard and have one welded back on.Is it safe to drive my mid '90s car with a broken catalytic converter? Will it keep running?
it won't hurt the engine, all the catalytic converter does is control emissions. I'd agree with the mechanic of 45 years that it isn't a good thing, but it won't cause damage.
The more you drive it in it's current condition,. the more damage you do to the engine. It is not in a condition to be driven anywhere. Is it safe to drive my mid '90s car with a broken catalytic converter? Will it keep running?
Just drill a few 1/2" holes in the cat's body - it will get a bit noisy, but you'll get some power back... replace it soon, you won't pass smog test with it plugged (or drilled)
This is bad for the environment wont cause real damage to the car
will ruin engine and of course fuel economy

Is it illegal for a dealer in Oklahoma to sell a car without catalytic converter?

I bought a car from a car lot but hadn't even taken it off the lot when I noticed the catalytic converter wasn't there. I tried to get my money back since the car never left the lot but the owner wasn't there. I still have not heard back from him but the car is still at his lot.Is it illegal for a dealer in Oklahoma to sell a car without catalytic converter?
yes, it is illegal to operate a car without the catalytic converter installed. All cars produced after 1975 should have one. The car, if spotted by an officer can be impounded. cancel your payment if by check or stop payment if by credit card. Either way i believe that you have a 24 hour window to return a vehicle after initial purchase, but in this case you never removed the car from the lot. I would make sure you have witness' lined up tp prove the car never left the lot, an exact mileage on the car when you purchased it should be in the purchase contract, so it should read the same numbers. If you know of any police officers, make sure they know the car was never moved and this will help you if the seller gives you a hard time, he may say you bought the car as is. i believe that there is a fine of up towards $2500 for operating a vehicle without the cat .

good luck.........
It is Illegal to remove or alter emission control devices, but it usually is not enforced and if you live in an area like me the DOL will not let you register your car without an emission test first.

your car will fail an emission test if your car is missing the cat. I think once you buy the car its your problem but you could call the police and ask them and/or the BBB.Is it illegal for a dealer in Oklahoma to sell a car without catalytic converter?
since its a dealership then yes it is illegal, a 99 is equipped with a catalytic converter and it is a FEDERAL CRIME to remove any emissions system components without replacing them! leave it in the parking lot (dont put any miles on it) and return it! you could be responsible for fixing this the dealership needs to be responsible for replacing this since they bought the car without the proper inspection.
It depends on the year model of the car. If the car was not equipped with one when manufactured then it does not need one. If it did come with one, then yes, it is illegal. Leave the car there, call the police and tell them your situation. They should help/direct you on how to get your money back.Is it illegal for a dealer in Oklahoma to sell a car without catalytic converter?
If the car is manufactured after 1996 it needs a cat, If before that it can be removed legally, Federal laws apply, not state.

What are the benefits of taking out your catalytic converter?

I'm starting to learn about exhaust systems in cars. My friend just bought a new subaru legacy 2.5gt. He said he wants to make his exhaust full catless. From what I know, you need your catalytic conv. to reduce emissions. If you don't have it in, isn't it illegal? won't you not pass emissions testing?? Also, what are the benefits of taking out the catalytic converter? (since it seems to be a common mod)What are the benefits of taking out your catalytic converter?
None. Today's engines are designed to work with a good working catalytic converter.

JD
Taking out the cat will improve fuel economy and power. HOWEVER, it is very illegal. You will NOT pass emissions, etc. What are the benefits of taking out your catalytic converter?
removing the cat is illegal. also the warranty will be void. it can not pass emissions.
Small power increase.

However without a cat you will not pass emissions, and will receive a hefty fine if you are caught without it. Today's cars are built to run with a cat, don't remove it.What are the benefits of taking out your catalytic converter?
the only benefit to removing the catalytic converter is when it is plugged up. otherwise there is no benefit. in fact if you remove the coverters you are breaking federal law, and if you are caught there is a rather large fine you will have to pay. remember that just because the state you live in doesnt require an emissions test, doesnt mean you can eliminate the emissions system on cars that are so equiped.
that cat has a before and after o2 sensor that helps your motor to map.if the numbers are wrong, the engine will not run right.it is possible to pass smog with a modified exhaust, but you wopnt be able to drive the damn thing cause itll run so weak
Removing the converter is the worst thing to do. It will cause the engine to fail before it's time and just stink up the world. THere is NO good reason to destroy what it took a decade or so for engineers to figure out. Converters do NOT rob you of power. Your friend is a total idiot if he does such a thing. The engine relies on signals from the O2 sensors before and after the converter to alter fuel quntity and timing. Tell your friend he is STUPID, STUPID, STUPIID for attempting such a thing. He will ruin the value of the car, and gain ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!! These engines have fuel management precision that produce every bit of power when called upon by the foot pedal under full load. THe fuel is enriched, and the best power is obtained. NO ONE drives their car with the pedal to the floor constantly!!! Your friend will just trash it out and lose power and performance. What a WASTE!!! Try installing a set of Denso Iridium plugs first. Then be SURE that you are using a "top tier" fuel. You will have more power than you need!!
Your friend might find a small increase in HP, however if caught, your friend might find his licence plates seized and a big fine (or a summons, meaning court time etc.) - before he'd be allowed to drive his car again he'd have to pay to have it re-installed. He'd still have to pay the towing fees also after his plates were seized.

The officer might not seize the plates, but that's up to the officer. They seize the plates 'to stop the offence from continuing' - so the cost involved in towing etc. doesn't even factor into the fine you pay. Not to mention if there's anything else your friend has in his car that he wouldn't want a lot of police attention to, it's a dumb idea.

It will fail the emissions test because the visual inspection will fail it even before they put it on the dyno.

Modern cars have better cats than before, you really gain almost nothing by removing them and the risk isn't worth it. Any emissions equipment installed on the car when it was made, has to remain on it (or a working equivalent) and working. Otherwise you pay a big price and get a big embarrassment if you're driving with your girlfriend when they seize your plates and you have to be towed.

How to free catalytic converter bolts?

I have a 96 civic, the bolts on the exhaust holding the catalytic converter on are kinda rusted and they are stuck and i dont wanna break them or strip them out, can any one give me any ideas about what to do, they are stuck pretty good, i have already soaked them in pb blaster a few times and they still wont come offHow to free catalytic converter bolts?
Unfortunately, some times all you can do is cut them off and replace them with nut and bolts from the hardware store. How to free catalytic converter bolts?
If they are that rusted you are going to need some welding equipment or a really good sawmill to remove it. Older Honda are notorious for having rusting exhaust. The new model ones I believe 2005 and up have lifetime warranties on the exhaust system. I recommend replacing the entire exhaust from headers back if you plan to keep the car at least a few more years. How to free catalytic converter bolts?
The bolt is going to snap. That's just how things are going to be. Only way around it is to paid the mechanic and they will snap it and replace the bolt.
you have a good cutting torch or a saws-all?

Why is my catalytic converter making this noise?

I just replaced the catalytic converter on my mazda 626. It is fine up until 4k RPM's when it makes a high pitched whining noise. It doesn't affect acceleration that I can note.

Any idea's?Why is my catalytic converter making this noise?
how do you know the cat is making that noise/ its tough to hang under the car when its making 4k/ i think you have another problemWhy is my catalytic converter making this noise?
it might not be the cat. it might be a heat shield rubbing on the exhaust. usually the cat will make a rattle noise.

How can we get our 2002 RAV4 to pass an emissions test without replacing the catalytic converter?

We are getting high NOx and it has not passed 3 times. We have cleaned the air filter, MAF, injectors, put in Premium gas and new spark plugs. This vehicle was mistakenly filled with diesel fuel and ran until it stalled some time ago. It was thoroughly cleaned and ran well since. (The owner cannot afford a new catalytic converter.)How can we get our 2002 RAV4 to pass an emissions test without replacing the catalytic converter?
ARRRRRRRRGH. You never get crappy american diesel (and I'm an american) out of the system once you screw it up short of replacing the system. If our diesel had any more sulfur and crap in it, our cars would run off sulfur first.

That being said, run a few bottles of LUCAS INJECTOR CLEANER through the engine and see if it'll soak the crap out.

The next step up is to soak "seafoam" or "subaru upper intake manifold cleaner" into the car. It smokes like a banshee when you do this but it cleans the engine with a vengeance. I generally don't recommend this because it cleans ALL the oil products out of the engine including the engine oil itself but in your case, it might me what you need to do. Pour some into the intake manifold, put a bit in the gas tank and drive it around. CHANGE THE OIL AFTERWARDS.How can we get our 2002 RAV4 to pass an emissions test without replacing the catalytic converter?
the sell sum stuff at the parts store that might help...but prob not...bad converter = failed testHow can we get our 2002 RAV4 to pass an emissions test without replacing the catalytic converter?
Find a mechanic who will run a different vehicle on the emissions machine and say it was your RAV4. He may want you to spot him a little extra cash though.

Is this a catalytic converter problem, or something else?

I've got a 2000 Hyundai Accent, with an intermittent no-start problem. It will start if it's been sitting unused for a few hours, but if you try to start it multiple times in an hour or two, it won't. It usually takes 20 minutes to an hour to get it to start when these instances occur.

It started doing it a couple months ago, quite suddenly. It's not happening any more frequently now than when it started, but it is lately taking longer to start each time. I've tried to research the problem, but there are so many possibilities. The computer says that the catalytic converter needs replaced, and a speed sensor on the transmission is bad. My father in law thinks replacing them will fix it.

Could these two problems be causing the no-start? I don't want to spend a lot of money to get it "fixed" and still have the problem. I need to nail this on the first try.

How can I tell, without taking it to a shop, that this is the problem, is there any way?Is this a catalytic converter problem, or something else?
if you actually have a bad converter it will cause hard starting all the time not sometimes, once the stop up they don't clean them self out,so you may have another problem also,it could still have a bad converter on it,but that may not be the total cause of the problems your having with it right now,and a speed sensor will not cause it not to start, you have other issues with it,try checking the plugs and see what they look like in it,its possible they may need replacing,it does have problems but not all of them are caused by the converter, good luck with it.
    thank you.

Is this a catalytic converter problem, or something else?
i think it is cuz the exhaust getting clogged up so causing it not to start
A speed sensor won't cause a car not to start (It shouldn't anyways). But I had an 86 Hyundai that had a similar problem and sure enough, the cat was plugged, then the car ran like new after replacing. Is this a catalytic converter problem, or something else?
might be catalytic, if it is you should be able to get a New one for FREE from dealer if car is has less than 8 yrs/80,000 miles. It is a federal warrenty on all catalytic converters for the USA market. I had to have mine replaced a couple weeks ago at GM.

you can disconnect the exhaust at the header and see if car runs well

  • How big of a difference will there be if I change my catalytic converter to a test pipe?

I have high performance catback and headers installed but I have the stock catalytic converter connecting them, it sounds really good right now but will there be any performance gains, like how much horsepower would be gained from a test pipe and also will it change the sound because I love the sound, it is really deep and not too loud. How big of a difference will there be if I change my catalytic converter to a test pipe?
The main thing you will notice is that no reputable shop will do it, and if you can find a shop that will, you will probably need to tow it there on a trailer, pay cash and trailer it away. You then can expect to never have any reputable shop anywhere ever work on it again until you put a cat on. If you take it to the right shop, they will call the EPA, and they will give you a $2,500 fine for removing it, and give the shop that did it a $10,000 fine.

But in a hypothetical situation, you will lose HP and torque by removing it. Modern engines need a certain amount of back pressure to ensure proper scavenging. This back pressure is created by the cat, and most modern cats produce very little back pressure. If you have no cat, your vehicle will blow unburnt fuel out your exhaust, will burn exhaust valves, and smell like @$$ to any poor soul behind you. Very uncool in my book......How big of a difference will there be if I change my catalytic converter to a test pipe?
There would be a modest gain (maybe one horse). Most modern catalytic converters are pretty free flowing. They are required by law and to remove one is a irresponsible act.

Now if you want better performance, just get some better headers and maybe a mega-flow catalytic. That is what I did.

What happens if they catch me with out a catalytic converter?

I live in Chicago ill and I have a 1996 Honda Accord and I removed my catalytic converter and was wondering if i will pass the emission test because i dont have the check engine light on and if they catch me without one what will they do?What happens if they catch me with out a catalytic converter?
A year ago it might be no big deal. This year or next you can bet it will be a big deal indeed. Besides Illinois fines the EPA will want a bite of you, and the last I heard they want $25K for an unauthorized change to a vehicle emission system. Don't worry about jail - that is just there to make sure you pay the fine no matter how many years it takes you to pay it off.

In the past year every regulatory agency I deal with at work - US Forest Service, FCC, OSHA, EPA, Highway Patrol - has stepped up enforcement and all are quite candid that it is to collect fees and fines at every possible opportunity. The EPA knows there are enough illegally modified vehicles out there to ease their budget problems and you can bet there are going to be lots of surprise inspections coming Real Soon Now. They would be incredibly stupid not to, and they are not incredibly stupid.
its Not a " $10,000 " Nor Would you Get 2 years in the pin Thats Just Crap.. i use to run my 74 Nova With open headers at best you would get a Ticket for excessive noise and have to have it fixed by law you Should have one as Well as Mufflerer but in this Day and age cops dont Really make a big deal out of that unless its REALLY Loud..and No it Would Not pass an emission test Seeing how thats What the catalytic converter if for.. i would Call your local Police Department or DMV And Make Sure as Far as What the Fine would be i Hope this Helpd youWhat happens if they catch me with out a catalytic converter?
Champ is right. The fine is hefty. I have seen some people keep the converter housing and run a straight piece of pipe through it. Either way, it's very risky and can cost you more in the end.
You will likely not pass your admissions test, and will likely to be forced to replace the CC.What happens if they catch me with out a catalytic converter?
No you will not. Illinois does the engine light test AND the dyno emission test. If they find you don't have a cat on your car, they will not pass you.
$10,000 fine and without it you WON'T pass an emissions test guaranteed.
The last time I checked it was a $10,000 fine and up to 2 years in prison.

I have a 2002 vw jetta 2.0 automatic. It has 86,000 miles on it. My car has been making a strange sound. My friend says that its coming from catalytic converter. Also my car switches gears kind of rough would the catalytic be the problem of that too? So what do you guys think is it time for a new catalytic converter or not? Thanks.Should I change my catalytic converter for my 2002 jetta?
You shouldn't replace your converter unless it has gone completely bad. You will know this by hearing rattling from under your car, and a smell of rotten eggs whenever the engine is warm and running.

And no, the converter is in no way affiliated with the transmission. It is not causing your rough gear switching. That would require new transmission fluid.Should I change my catalytic converter for my 2002 jetta?
Go to the tail pipe and feel the exhaust. It should be good pressure-it should push your hand away-if not it may be time for a new unit-also are you smelling a rotten egg smell??a good indicator of a bad cat-if you hit the cat with your hand(COLD EXHAUST) does it rattle???Cat is broken up inside %26amp; needs a new one.Now--2nd part--Have you had a transmission service done lately???Transmission service cures most poor shifting in 90 out of 100 cars I work on-some need more help ,but try a service first-a good tranny guy can look at the contents in the pan %26amp; tell you whats going on.Should I change my catalytic converter for my 2002 jetta?
There is a chance that it is the catalytic converter but really can't say 100%. You should have a professional hook it up for a diagnostic first, because catalytic converters aren't cheap.
The hard shifting is not the catalyic converter. A car can run without a catalytic converter but it's illegal in many states. The catalytic converter is to reduce emissions make it less toxic.

it is about that time to change it but not necessary until the car cuts off and fails to stay running.

you will notice the feeling of shaking while idling.in most cases it will fail to stay runningWhen should I replace the catalytic converter on my 2002 vw tdi beetle?
if no problems with the cat then its ok if problems then has to be done asapWhen should I replace the catalytic converter on my 2002 vw tdi beetle?
you don,t have to as long as it,s still good.
There is no time schedule for that to be replaced if it fails smog on certain max pollutions it could be a cat if you feel the need you can have it tested at shops usually a bad plugged cat or cats will result in hotter running engine overheating because it can't push out the hot gases and it builds to much back pressure also other symptoms is loss of power and hasitation when trying to start from a dead stop.

X-pipe without the cats will not pass emissions. But to be sure check your local emissions laws for your state. In cali this will not pass.
this is not street legal. You may or may not pass tail pipe emissions testing, and if they check for the CAT you will be failed for sure,If I get an X-Pipe without a catalytic converter will it pass emissions tests?
Nope, will not pass an emissions test. Is it a visual or a full hook up? You can usually buy the race cats, that are almost completly gutted, they work good and help pass emissions test. You may want to look into how stringent your state is and talk to your local shops.

without the converter it won't pass an emissions test.

Could the catalytic converter being broken cause the air bag light to go on?

In December I hit a block of ice and broke the catalytic converter in my Jetta. About 20 minutes after this happened the airbag light went on and has not gone off since. When we got the car checked out to see what was wrong with it we were sent to a muffler shop to replace the cat con and they had no explanation for the air bag light. Could it be related? My husband says no but it seems like to much of a coincidence that they happened at the same time.Could the catalytic converter being broken cause the air bag light to go on?
What happened is when you hit the cat you damaged the wiring for the sensor for the air bag. The light won't go out until you get the sensor fixed.Could the catalytic converter being broken cause the air bag light to go on?
The air bag system and the catalytic converter are totally unrelated - what might not be unrelated is the damage that might have been caused by hitting the block of ice.Could the catalytic converter being broken cause the air bag light to go on?
they got nothin to do with eachother.

  • Can someone tell me if this header and this catalytic converter will fit?

I need to get a new header, catalytic converter, and cat back. I have already picked out my cat back, so now i need to figure out if the header will fit on the cat. It says on the header that the inlet/outlet is 1.75"/2.0" and on the catalytic converter it says its inlet is 2.25" and outlet is 2.5". So just let me know if they will fit the pictures/website of them is below.

No, they must be the same size.....Can someone tell me if this header and this catalytic converter will fit?
that converter is the wrong size, you need a 2.0" Inside diameter on the converter to fit your header that is 2.0" outside diameter and then you need to know for sure what size your pipe is at the back of your old converter to be able to get the correct size on the outlet on the new converter.

What does it mean to straight pipe a catalytic converter?

i have a 96 toyota 4runner and there's something wrong with the catalytic converter. someone told me i should just straight pipe it. what exactly does that mean? what does it consist of? what will it do to my car, and how easy or hard is it to have someone do it at home? What does it mean to straight pipe a catalytic converter?
Whoever told you does not know jack. Is illegal and the vehicle was not tuned from factory that way. As stated before... it will run like crap. Just put one back on. There are some good aftermarket Cats that will increase Exhaust Flow and give you few Ft/Lb of Torque and few HPs more. But they cost more and the gain is not that great.

1st what is doing now that you need to change the Cat? If is running really bad, it will get worst. As simple as that ! And if is fine, why do you want to change/remove it?
In Arkansas they could care less if you take it off, not illegal here.

What does it mean to straight pipe a catalytic converter?
It's a $10,000. Federal fine if you get caught.
What they want you to do is take the converter off and replace it with a piece of exhaust pipe. It will have no effect on your engine except that it will breath easier (less back pressure). The down is that in most states, (if not all) it is illegal to do this. There are some muffler shops that will do it for you if you check around. Anyone who has done exhaust work at home in their garage can probably handle the job. What does it mean to straight pipe a catalytic converter?
    what they said....
It means to remove the catalytic converter and replace it with a piece of exhaust pipe. On your year of vehicle the check engine light will stay on and your gas mileage will go down.
It's not that expensive to replace the cat convertor and it'll keep you legal. Your not likely to get a check engine light unless you have an O2 sensor (oxygen sensor) mounted past the cat convertor.

Straight piping is only allowed if you ship the car outside the country to a place that still sells only leaded gasoline.

Otherwise, the penalty costs exceed the replacement costs so a new cat convertor is cheapest in the long run. You can ask your local parts retailiers how much one costs for you car and then find someone to install it for you. Labor is only like 1/2 hour and the part is probably less than $200 for a small car like yours.

I replaced my own cat convertor on my 1985 truck six years ago and it cost me only $110.

    Good Luck!
to put a PIPE in the place of your Cat. Converter. It's Illegal. Except for racing on tracks and such..

you'll waste more gas.. and as stated get a check engine light... but the performance will be improved due to better flow.

My car has the original 24 year old Catalytic Converter on the car. Is there anyway it could still be good?

It's always been a summer car so seen no winter, and has under 60,000miles/100,000km on it.

Is there anyway that the Catalytic Converter could still be good after 24 years? My car has the original 24 year old Catalytic Converter on the car. Is there anyway it could still be good?
It probably is, catalytic converters wear out when all the chemical elements inside them are gone from reacting with the exhaust, this usually takes a long time. The most common way that they go bad is from getting clogged, so if there is still exhaust coming out of your tailpipe then it is most likely still good.My car has the original 24 year old Catalytic Converter on the car. Is there anyway it could still be good?
No reason to doubt the catalyst. They are supposed (supposed I might add), to last the life of the vehicle.

Is a VW catalytic converter covered under Exhaust Emission Warranty?

My catalytic converter is fine, BUT the pipe is defective. It's all one piece, so the whole thing needed replacing. Is the pipe considered part of the converter and therefore covered under warranty? My car is less than 8 yrs / 80,000 miles. Is a VW catalytic converter covered under Exhaust Emission Warranty?
yea it should be call a dealer to make sure, it may be cheaper for them to fix it all in one, then cutting out what they needIs a VW catalytic converter covered under Exhaust Emission Warranty?
Catalytic converters are federally mandated to be warrantied for 100,000 miles, the pipes are not. In order for the cat to be covered the vehicle has to be experiencing driveabiltiy problems due to its failure, or, the car must fail an emissions test, also specifically due to its malfunction. These were the rules when I was working on cars. If it is just a pipe, some can be repaired or spliced, welded or patched. You need to find a reputable technician whom you trust, or better yet, that you know to look at it before you do anything else.

Got new diesel exhaust with no catalytic converter: Is it much worse for the environment?

I've got a 2006 Silverado 2500HD with the Duramax 6.6L diesel. I recently upgraded to a turbo-back exhaust system, which apparently has no catalytic converter. Where I am this is legal, but I know the converters are there for a reason. How much of a difference do they really make? Should I feel really guilty about destroying the environment and switch back to stock exhaust?Got new diesel exhaust with no catalytic converter: Is it much worse for the environment?
If you are concerned about the environment you wouldn't be driving a truck anyways, or a diesel one at that. Don't worry about it, because that exhaust probably made your truck more fuel efficient. Burning less fuel is the best way to reduce emissions.Got new diesel exhaust with no catalytic converter: Is it much worse for the environment?
Diesels don't ever have catalytic converters thats why they are more fuel efficient. diesels engines are made to produce more torque at slower rpms the cat converter makes that hard to do. The converter uses energy from the engine to heat exhause gases over 1500 degrees. diesels burn much cooler and don't emit the same pollutants as gasoline. thats why there is no need for them to have cat converters.Got new diesel exhaust with no catalytic converter: Is it much worse for the environment?
i would feel bad. did u know that most big rigs that are out there on the roads all day and night don't have catalytic converters.

  • How important is the catalytic converter? Can't i just do away with it?

My catalytic converter is stoped up on my 03 olds alero. Can't i just have it choped off and drive on?How important is the catalytic converter? Can't i just do away with it?
if there are emission laws where you drive, no. otherwise you can try, but not all modern vehicles get the same mileage without it.How important is the catalytic converter? Can't i just do away with it?
    1. You are probably breaking laws without it.

    2. Performance of your vehicle is poor.

    3. Without converter your vehicle pollutes much more.

Enough? How important is the catalytic converter? Can't i just do away with it?
Have it replaced and find out why it is plugged. Your car likely has an O2 sensor behind the converter that will read in error and cause the car to run poorly without the converter in place. The fact that it is a federal crime to remove it is also a concern. If a shop is caught removing one, they face huge fines

Can I block the Catalytic Converter hole in my 1993 Grand Cherokee?

I have rattling going on in my catalytic converter, I bought the new one from Schuck's but the one they gave me has a place for the O2 sensor after the Cat. The one in my truck has the nothing after the Cat. Can i just put a bolt in the hole? Can I block the Catalytic Converter hole in my 1993 Grand Cherokee?
yes you put a bolt in the hole and tightenCan I block the Catalytic Converter hole in my 1993 Grand Cherokee?
If you need to modify it, It's best to take it down to a muffler shop where they can weld a piece of piping on. chances are if that area for the o2 sensor means it may be too long anyway. They could either put a patch over the hole or cut of a small section of the pipe altogether to ensure it's the proper length.

To be honest, they probably wouldn't even charge you but 20 bucks to do it.Can I block the Catalytic Converter hole in my 1993 Grand Cherokee?
Go back to the store and check if they look up the right one. If that's what they have, then go to another store and get the right one.

btw, yeah, you can just put a bolt to plug it up. Doesn't mean one day it won't rattle off.

Is it worth it to replace the catalytic converter in a 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Cierra?

It didn't pass inspection. It has 70k miles (or so the odometer says) and doesn't look so good cosmetically? Is it not worth the $400 or so to replace the catalytic converter. I don't have a lot of money, and would rather not if the car is a piece of crap anyway. Is it worth it to replace the catalytic converter in a 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Cierra?
well if the catalytic converter is the only problem then yeah it's worth it cause it converts exhaust gasses... You either drive it or don't...
I'd say, go for it. Even if the car isn't "worth" the $400 or so, at least you'll get a few more years out of it. Since it didn't pass inspection, chances are you're not going to junk it are you? If you are, with what will you replace it? Another "junker" that may or may not pass inspection? Is it worth it to replace the catalytic converter in a 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Cierra?
It SHOULD NOT cost you that much to replace that converter maybe $125 if that will fix it -do it....You do not need to replace it with O.E.M. use after market
yes it is where are you going to get a car for 400 hundred that you know if you can install it yourself less then 100 bucks may get a little dirt your eyes but should be able 2 cut the old out with a sawz all and clamp anew 1 onIs it worth it to replace the catalytic converter in a 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Cierra?
well i think you answered your own question. if you dont think the car is worth it and can find another beater for the money then dont fix it. example: a girl just bought a car recently for $1,000 and then brought it to my work to be inspected. well when all was said and done she put an additional $3,000 in to it. now is the car worth $4,000. probably not. she would be lucky to get $2,500 if she sold it right now. i guess my point is dont waste money on something that is not worth it.

Virtually none. But you will make it impossible for the car to pass inspection.

Can you bypass a catalytic converter on a 2000 Chevrolet blazer?

It has a vortex motor. I dont know much about cars but someone told me that some vehicles can have the catalytic converter bypassed, just wondering if this is possible on this type of vehicle. Can you bypass a catalytic converter on a 2000 Chevrolet blazer?
Sure.. You can remove the cat, but it's not legal. Some shops won't even do a service like that, or atleast would want you to sign a waiver. Can you bypass a catalytic converter on a 2000 Chevrolet blazer?
Sure, if you want a $10,000 fine. It is a federal offense if you remove any properly functioning OEM emissions equipment from a vehicle, including the catalytic converter. Most states have a limit on how much you can be fined, usually between $1000-1500, but the federal law sets the fine at $10,000. Also, shops will not do this kind of work because they will get fined a minimum of $10,000 in just about any state, and can be up to $100,000, and this is for EACH offense. Imagine if they did it to just 1 car a day for a year, how much that fine would be. Realistically, unless the cat is bad, you aren't going to gain anything by bypassing it.

  • Where can I find a low price catalytic converter?

I need a catalytic converter for a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am. My car is from California so it requires a specialty part, something to do with the emmissions in Cali. I can't find anything online. I even called Pontiac and according to them my only option is through the dealer, and they quote 700.00 bucks. CAN ANYONE HELP ME?Where can I find a low price catalytic converter?
Don't get taken! The dealer will rock you if you try to buy from them. A catalytic converter is not anything exotic though they play it off to be. All auto parts stores can order generic catalytic converters based on the original dimensions (length X width) and the diameter of the exhaust pipe that enters it. Any muffler shop will easily install it for you. The scrap yard nowaday will probably not have one since they can fetch $30.00 to $200.00 bucks for an old one! Here's the secret ......shhhhhhhh.......they have platinum in them. Good luck, and just go to Pep Boys or O'reilly's or Auto Zone and they'll hook you up!
Most auto parts store like Advance, Checker, Autozone, Kragen, etc.. can sell youan appropriate replacement converter for a lot less than the dealer. You may need to have someone install it (muffler shop) but you will stillprobably come out cheaper than the dealer.Where can I find a low price catalytic converter?
Go on ebay and buy a Magnaflow. Those are the ones I buy, and at 50-$60 each, then I paid $50 to have it installed, so for $100, new converter and installed.
Try to look on Ebay. My husband finds just about everything he needs on there!Where can I find a low price catalytic converter?
No Salvage yard in Calif. will sell you a converter unless they are taking a chance on getting busted......Many Muffler shops install Universal Cats that require being welded in and will pass Smog... they do this at a price about half of what the dealer wants... good luck...
you don't indicate the mileage on you GA, but the car came with an 8 year/80000 mile emissions warranty. If you are over the mileage, check out NAPA online. They should have or be able to get what you need
    salvage yard. best bet.
Try craigslist, and local parts stores. If you can't find anything there, and if you live in California, go to or call one of the parts yards/car junk yards like, Pick Your Part, etc. Good luck!

Does a 1997 Eclipse Turbo need a catalytic converter?

I bought a 1997 Eclipse Turbo that does not have a catalytic converter. Do I need to install one. I have some white smoke coming from the tail pipes. Is this the reason? Head gasket is fine, no oil leaks. ThanksDoes a 1997 Eclipse Turbo need a catalytic converter?
the white smoke is probably coming from a bad turbo bearing, its pretty common. the catalytic converter has nothing to do with the smoke that just clears up bad gases coming out of the engine.Does a 1997 Eclipse Turbo need a catalytic converter?
He's right. Eventually you'll end up replacing the turbos or either rebuilding them. Don't worry, just enjoy but that's all it is.

Is it good to straight pipe your catalytic converter in your car?

My catalytic converter have gone bad in my 2004 ford taurus, I have been told to straight pipe them but im afraid that it will just cause more damage then help. I was wondering what straight piping my car would do to the engine? and does it ever really help to straight pipe it?Is it good to straight pipe your catalytic converter in your car?
It would cause your vehicle to be very loud. It is illegal to run a car without a catylitic converter when it came with it originally. It would also effect your MPG due to the oxygen sensors not getting the same readings as stock. Is it good to straight pipe your catalytic converter in your car?
    Is it good?

Try, it is *very* illegal. Like violation of *Federal* emissions laws. But hey, it's your a$$ not your lame-brained buddy or whoever gave you the bright idea.

How do you know your cat has gone bad?

If you pull the cat, you will totally screw up the O2 sensing on the vehicle and who knows what type of fuel mixture the computer will generate. There is typically at least one O2 sensor prior to the cat and one after it. The two sensors compare to one another and from this info the engine management computer calculates a fuel mixture. Is it good to straight pipe your catalytic converter in your car?
    I don't believe so

What happens when your catalytic converter goes out on your car?

my mom has a cadillac esv and her catalytic converter went out. what will happen? how long do i have to fix it? and will it hurt the car even more to drive while its broken? What happens when your catalytic converter goes out on your car?
MOST PEOPLE do not know when a catalytic converter breaks, so what is it that makes you think this, if it is an engine light, it could be an internal engine problem, that was picked up in the oxy sensor in the cat, or did you like run over something and break it? this needs to be repaired as soon as possible as the car was designed to run with one in working condition. take it to a muffler shop and have one installed, it takes about an hour, probably less. What happens when your catalytic converter goes out on your car?
It will fail an emissions test. The CC has no other effect on vehicle function than to 'clean' (convert some harmful molecules into less dangerous ones) the exhaust before it exits the vehicle.

Unfortunately, you will likely have to take it to a muffler shop to get this changed as they are designed to be 'irremovable' in order to deter tampering. What happens when your catalytic converter goes out on your car?
when your cat goes out the check engine light will come On. Your gas mileage will suffer.....yeah you can drive it but fix it as soon as you can to get better mileage and avoid the rotten egg smell

Can driving a car with a bad catalytic converter cause engine damage?

The car still runs and drives fine, just makes loud exhaust noise because of the cracked catalytic converter. I was wondering if it was safe to keep driving the vehicle, or if it may cause engine damage by driving it long distances like that.. Please let me know, I don't want to blow anything up lol.Can driving a car with a bad catalytic converter cause engine damage?
Your gas millage will decrease and you wont pass emissions. Temporary is ok but you should get it fixed. The sooner the better because it will save you gas money in the long run.
Driving the car with a bad catalytic converter will not make the car blow up. All it will do is make a weired sound. You could run the car without any exhaust at all and would not hurt the car but would sure be loud. I would make sure that the converter gets changed quick because if the car is newer then 1984 then if a cop finds out that you are running the car with a bad converter then they can go right to your window and take your inspection sticker off and have your car impounded so I would not blow off getting it fixed. If would like to talk to me for a little more help then you can email me at supersport69@ymail.com.Can driving a car with a bad catalytic converter cause engine damage?
Yes, it will. Its a little costly, but you need to have that thing fixed. I ignored one in a Ford that I used to drive, and it turned cherry red one night and nearly wrecked the whole engine.
it will burn your valves up causing major problems. but it would take it awhile for it to do that but i wouldnt drive it everywhere i go for a long period of time. Can driving a car with a bad catalytic converter cause engine damage?
Won't cause engine damage. It will not work as effectively at reducing harmfulemissionss into the atmosphere

  • What can i do about a clogged catalytic converter?

my catalytic converter is clogged, can i repair it or do i need to replace it?What can i do about a clogged catalytic converter?
Catalytic converter internally looks like a honeycomb. It is made of ceramic and can break if hot and submerged in water or run through a car wash that sprays cold water under the vehicle.

Or could have gotten clogged by carbon from a poorly running engine.

Either way It will have to be replaced, there is no unclogging or rebuilding of this part.
Unfortunately you will have to buy a new catalytic converter. What has happen is the ceramic material has melted together and no longer purging the fumes of your exhaust. Sorry for the bad news. Some mechanics will tell you to either remove you catalytic converter and just put straight pipe but once you do that then you will have problems with your 02 sensors. Plus, in most states, a missing or modified catalytic converter is illegal. Catalytic converters, when operating properly cleans a lot of carbon from the exhaust. What can i do about a clogged catalytic converter?
Some people have been known to cut the pipe after the converter, ram a pipe inside it to break up the honeycomb, start the engine to blow out the pieces, then reconnect the pipe. This is probably illegal in some circumstances.
Only legal way is to replace it. Other option based on car over 12 years is to hollow it out. Car would need to be older than 1996 to do it correctly. What can i do about a clogged catalytic converter?
your cat will be full of things called baffles you will not be able to stick anything in there without breaking these baffles

i'm afraid you need a new cat

It depends on what shape the rest of your exhaust system is in because if a pipe has rusted or needs replacing or the muffler has rusted out that has to be fixed as well . I paid 250 bucks for my last converter installed . I went to a local muffler shop my mechanic recommended and went from there.

Is it a big deal if my catalytic converter sensor is disrupted?

my friend is a mechanic and check it out on the computer and it says it's the catalytic converter sensor is disrupted. he told me it's no big deal. true? i personally just don't like having the check engine light on. should i get it fixed and how much will it cost?Is it a big deal if my catalytic converter sensor is disrupted?
no, just when you go for the clean air testIs it a big deal if my catalytic converter sensor is disrupted?
The oxygen sensor error code he read out of your computer doesn't necessarily mean that oxygen sensor is bad, and can mean that the engine's running too rich or lean or the catalytic converter isn't funtioning like the computer knows it should. There's a risk of damaging your expensive catalytic converter in some cases, so if you want to know the real problem, get a diagnosis from your car dealer even if it costs you a labor hour to get the repair quote. Then you'll know how expensive it will be to fix and you might even fix it yourself once the problem has been properly diagnosed by the dealer.

How long would it take to kill yourself in a car with a catalytic converter?

I don't want to kill myself, but I read a story where a guy tried to gas himself in his car. He sat in it for thirty minutes with a hose from the exhaust pipe feeding into the car and still didn't die. The explanation was that the car had a catalytic converter. Is that possible? How long would it take to kill yourself in a car with a catalytic converter?
    It was a story.

Probably got a free beer for the story.

A cat reduces the amount of CO that is emitted out the tailpipe. But it is never to zero. There is more than enough bad gas remaining to do the job (compared to a vehicle that does not have the device.)

Any carbon based material(paper, plastic, rubber, gas, oil, wood, tobacco, dope) all give off Carbon Monoxide.

  • How do you gut a catalytic converter?

How do you gut a catalytic converter and is this legal? Or would you have to either get or new converter or can you put these parts back into it for inspection? How do you gut a catalytic converter?
There are quite a few things you can do. To keep it legal, you can buy a high flow catalytic converter. It is less restrictive and you can pass inspection with it. On the other hand you can get a Cat Delete Pipe which is a straight through pipe which you can replace your Cat and when inspection time comes around you can put the stock cat back on. Remember that if you are caught without a catalytic converter it is an EPA issue and can carry heavy fines so I recommend the High Flow Cat. I have one on my car and it works great. You will only gain 3-6 more hp with the cat delete so might as well stay legal.
It's fairly easy to hammer loose the delicate ceramic honey comb inside a converter but bare in mind if your state requires a converter for the year of your car don't do it! The car will not pass the state emissions test at the time of the annual inspection.

The electrical spark advance and mixture to the fuel injectors will be messed up. All these tasks are balanced to work properly with the on-board computer with the converter in place. If you need a replacement converter check out: autopartswarehouse.com for an original fit Walker converter or another brand free-flowing unit that may be difficult to install without some bending and welding. How do you gut a catalytic converter?
it is not legal to gut it out. you do no good by doing this you waste more fuel. ignition timing is set so that you still have a flame going to the cat or though it at times to heat the catalytic converter, by removing that material you have a wasted flame.
really no reason too waste your time.. doing it will not get anything out of it and once you bust it open its trash and only a new one will work if your having a problems with it then replace it if not leave it a lone.. car is not gong to run any better or go any faster or get any better fuel mileage How do you gut a catalytic converter?
your cat is a critical part of your exhaust and should not be tampered with it is like a honeycomb inside and can only be replaced they are expensive to buy and if you remove it it will effect your emission's and your mot
replace it is the best for all.

Can i sue the previous owner for taking off the catalytic converter?

I bought a 2005 scion tc from a private seller. He took that catalytic converter off to put on an aftermarket header, and sold it to me without a catalytic converter. Someone told me that I could sue for this. I definitely know that it is a large fine, and now I have to pay to get it fixed. Can i sue?Can i sue the previous owner for taking off the catalytic converter?
No. When you buy a used vehicle, unless there is a written warranty clause in a contract you sign, you can not sue or demand repayment for the converter.

However, you probably should have looked at it closer before you bought it. It's your responsibility for not checking. Can i sue the previous owner for taking off the catalytic converter?
you couldnt tell from the sound of the car that it had a modified exhaust system? i would think that convincing a judge of this would mean you would have to provide some proof that the sound of the car with the header sounds no different from any other scion.....that may be tough to do.

How much can you expect to get at a scrapyard for a Catalytic Converter?

I know the outside is tin, and the inside contains Platinum.

Will scrapyards take the cat as a whole, or do you have to extract the platinum pellets separately?

How much can you expect to get out of a catalytic converter at a scrapyard? How much can you expect to get at a scrapyard for a Catalytic Converter?
Why not just call up some scrapyards and end any speculation and guessing? I mean, wouldn't that make the most sense?

The market has crashed for them, I wouldn't expect to get more than 10-20 for a normal car converter, a bit more for larger commercial trucks.

But yeah, call up some yards first....
most cats don't use pellets since the 1970s/1980s

the Platinum is coated on honeycomb sheets of steel

usually you can give them the whole thing and it depends on the condition of it, but every place is different

Where and How to obtain a Catalytic Converter for calif. OBD II?

Where or how should I buy a replacement catalytic converter for my 2000 Chevy-s10. My catalytic was stolen, not damaged. And I will not still one either. I read the following off the internet, but I want to ask real people like you. What should I do? Any sites? Any personal experiences?

Any catalytic converter offered for an OBD II equipped automobile (mostly 1996 and newer vehicles) is legal for sale in "49 states", but not in California.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has not certified any new, aftermarket catalytic converter from any manufacturer for use or sale in California on an OBD II equipped vehicle.

Until CARB certifies an aftermarket converter, no company can legally supply a new, aftermarket catalytic converter for OBD II equipped vehicles for use or sale in California.Where and How to obtain a Catalytic Converter for calif. OBD II?
Have you tried going to the Chevy dealership. GM should be able to get you an OEM converter.Where and How to obtain a Catalytic Converter for calif. OBD II?
I dont think that is true. Many companies and exhaust business sell or replace catalytic converters. OBDII came in around 1995, this is a huge amount of vehicles you are talking about. I know companies make aftermarket OEM cats for pre 2002 and other vehicles. I like the quality of dealership parts, but it will run you around $600-700 for the part alone. I just got one for a 2001 Pontiac 2.4L and it was $650 after a discount. The vehicle passed CA. SMOG with the cat on it.Where and How to obtain a Catalytic Converter for calif. OBD II?
check muffler shops like Midas and Meinke and see where they get their cats from... If they say dealer only item.. unfortuneately that is what you are looking at..

But Basically I don't think there is usually any difference between cali cats and other non california state cats.. mainly it's usually programming in the processor of the cars and the addition of a few more sensors/such

What is a Catalytic Converter from a car?

I took my car in the shop and they told me that my car needs the catalytic converter changed. What is that? I have a honda accord 03 they are charging me to fix it $500. Is that right. How much is that piece in the auto parts if I go get it?What is a Catalytic Converter from a car?
    03 Honda Accord part #18160RAAA11

    Dealers list price $633.98

They offered you aftermarket part, so $500 with labor sounds OK.
It is part of the exhaust system and the cost should include the disposal of the old one as well as the price of the replacement. What is a Catalytic Converter from a car?
a catalytic converter is so expensive because it is made with Platinum.

They should cost about $150 retail. it is on your exhaust and it burns up excess fuel coming out of your engine to reduce emmission.

Shop around, $500 is too much
the catalytic converter is a small box in the exhaust just after the engine. what it does is take nasties in the exhaust gas like carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides etc and convert them into gasses such as carbon dioxide (CO2), and water (H2O).

they are very expensive because most of them contain precious metals such as platinum in them.

they DO NOT burn up excess fuel. they are actually damaged by excess fuel, and as a result cat converters are often damaged by rich running engines. What is a Catalytic Converter from a car?
yeah i would say that 500$ is too much to buy you can sell a catalytic converter from a car that is old and doesn't work for around 75$ to a scrap yard so they are a little pricey considering the Platinum and copper used in it.
There is no way that you would need you catalytic converter changed on a 03 car. Espcially a honda. Seems to me the shop is trying to rip you off. Like other have said its in your exhaust system. Look under your car follow the exhaust off the manafold to and you will see a small thing that resembles a muffler. after the catalytic converter you will find the actual muffler which will be larger... then the end of the exhasut pipe. (I CANT STRESS THIS ENOUGH GET A SECOND OPINION) I would be hard pressed to think you need a new catalytic converter.... Why did you have the car in the shop to begin with??? (The cost isnt in the converter itself... legally it needs to welded into place because they are not to be removed...your cost is in the labor.)

What can I expect to pay to replace a catalytic converter?

I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer at 115,000 miles. Had a guy do a diagnostic and was told the catalytic converter needs to be replaced. I don't mind paying because I need this car to run well for me. My question is, how much can I expect to pay, parts and labor. I live in San Diego if region makes any difference. Thanks!!What can I expect to pay to replace a catalytic converter?
There is a good chance that there is really nothing wrong with the one you already have. Many times, a converter will get clogged up when the fuel mixture goes wrong. THis creates extra unwanted hydrocarbons that jamb things up. Here is what to do. First, buy a can of spray Gum-out. Open your hood, and find your IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE. On most cars, it is very easy to remove and clean and then re-install. While you are at it, remove your air intake snorkel, and clean the throttle body. Put things back together, and start the engine. Find EVERY vacuum orifice, and insert the nozzle from the Gum-out into ALL of them. If you are clever, you will be able to figure out a way to insert the nozzle underneath the intake boot. SPRAY, SPRAY, SPRAY!! Run the engine and spray directly into the intake system. THis will remove carbon from the valves, piston tops, and rings. It will also clean out the O2 sensors, and shock them into working right. Also, it wil clean the debris from your converter. A couple of cans at $3,00 each will usually repair the damages already done to the converter. The CAUSE of this problem is re-condensed engine oil vapors. You are best off by using an engine cleaner, and switching over to a good synthetic, that won't make ANY sludge. GOOD LUCK!!
The best answer for that, being it can vary depending on the mechanic/tech. Most common labor on a vehicle is around $25.00 an hour. It usually takes around 2 hours or so for most mechanics to change it. As I have seen, a catalytic converter usually costs around 50-90 dollars for semi-modern model cars to new cars. Being that yours is a foreign made vehicle, it could cost close to double that. Hopefully I helped.

What's a fair cost to get a catalytic converter replaced on a 2003 Toyota Corolla?

My check engine light came on the other day. Turned out to be from some sensor having to do with the catalytic converter. The Toyota dealer ran some tests and says I need a new one. They want $1600 to replace it. I couldn't believe it. Is this a reasonable price? What's a fair cost to get a catalytic converter replaced on a 2003 Toyota Corolla?
That's worth a second opinion. It is very rare for a catalyst to fail after 8 years (in fact, there is a federally mandated 96 month 80K mile warranty on catalytic converters) but I could believe there is a sensor integral with it that is bad.

Toyota converters are exceptionally good. The stainless steel lasts forever and they perform very well. Aftermarket converters too often don't do the job - see the first source. What's a fair cost to get a catalytic converter replaced on a 2003 Toyota Corolla?
The parts geek, just a random website i found, has one in the low three hundreds. If you are sure this is your cars issues, you do have the option of buying the part yourself and then paying someone to install it.

How long can a vehicle be driven while waiting for a new catalytic converter?

Our mechanic told us that if the check engine light came back on in our Mitsubishi Lancer we would need a new catalytic converter. The light just came on, but we can't get the car back to the shop for a week. Is if okay to drive the car for a week before replacing the cat? Is it dangerous or will it hurt the car?How long can a vehicle be driven while waiting for a new catalytic converter?
Hey... Dont worry too much, if your Lancer still has power. If your catalytic converter is clogged it wouid be similar to "lugging" a car up a hill in too high of a gear. Thats harmful... and can burn out your valves, or engine. There is a concern ... you wont be able to pass smog with that check engine light on, so hopefully that new cat will take care of all the saved codes . Hope this helps. How long can a vehicle be driven while waiting for a new catalytic converter?
It is okay to drive the car. Catalytic converter has nothing to do with the operation of the engine itself, it just cleans up the exhaust. You could drive indefinitely with a bad catalytic converter. The only thing that happens is the car pollutes more. How long can a vehicle be driven while waiting for a new catalytic converter?
go ahead and drive it,it won't cause damage.the only problem is if the converter completely plugs up your car won't start.or if it almost plugs up you might not be able to get any speed out of it

Where can I buy a cheap catalytic converter?

Gypsies stole my catalytic converter from my diesel V40, can someone recommend a salvage yard or somewhere that does cheap secondhand ones? It's a 2001 model

Thanks ever so much!Where can I buy a cheap catalytic converter?
Gypsies stole it? Haha that sounds funny-sorry.

But i wouldnt try a used exhaust part-you really could be wasting your time. Exhaust parts generally rust solid onto a car and together. To unhook the converter from the exhaust pipe might require doing something extreme like cutting it off, ruining the part. BTW, i hope they didnt ruin the rest of your exhaust system geting your old one off.

Just go to your local auto parts store. They generally will sell 2-3 different "quality" of products. They will sell the original manufacturer one-one that is actually made by whoever made your car-this will be the most expensive. Then they might sell a couple knock off brands-made by other companies yet the price is alot cheaper but still just as good of a product more than likely.

  • How much should it cost for parts and labor for a 2003 Camry catalytic converter?

My check ending light just came on and I took my car to Midas and they told me it was my catalytic converter. The part is going to cost me 710 and 150 for labor. I have a feeling I'm being taken for a fool... I looked online and some of the converters that I saw cost about 250. How much should I reasonably pay for this repair? How much should it cost for parts and labor for a 2003 Camry catalytic converter?
You're car seems fairly new to be needing a catalytic converter. Most converters will pretty much last the lifetime of the car.I'd take it somewhere else and get a 2nd opinion. How much should it cost for parts and labor for a 2003 Camry catalytic converter?
go to an exhaust/muffler specialty shop. they are not as likely to rip you off. did you check to see if the cat might be warranty work? How much should it cost for parts and labor for a 2003 Camry catalytic converter?
    $2500.00
First of all, you should never change the catalytic converter unless it is breaking up and rattling, or you simply can not pass DEQ without changing it.

A catalytic converter is not good for a car or the environment.

It basically takes soot (that they test for), and converts it to toxic chemicals like formalin, cyanates, sulfites, etc. (that they do not test for).

There is no light that says your converter needs to be replaces, and they are probably wrong in the diagnosis.

The O2 sensor is much more likely.

But even more important is to fix what is causing the converter or sensor to go bad, such as a bad plug wire.

Then you are being way over charged.

The catalytic converter is the easiest part of the exhaust system to change because it usually have a simple flange with external bolts.

Labor should only be $50 to $75.

The converter is only $107 on the internet.

Even if you live in California and need the dual sensor one, it is only $251.

Midas is charging more than double what it should be.

( but it is true retail should always be at least 30% more than the internet, because there is a better guarantee)

Find a good mechanic you can trust, and don't assume the light going on means you absolutely have to fix something. It is just something to have looked at just in case. Check engine lights go on and off all the time, from simple things like going up a steep hill. It does not mean there is something for sure wrong.

Don't go to a muffler shop because they will just want to try to sell you exhaust parts.

A real mechanic will determine if anything actually needs to be done, not just sell you something you don't need.

How much horsepower will i gain on a desiel by removing Catalytic converter?

I have a 2006 gmc duramax desiel and i want to remove my catalytic converter to get more horsepowerHow much horsepower will i gain on a desiel by removing Catalytic converter?
if the truck was manufactured with one then it is illegal to remove it and more so than that most vehicles today have the exhaust system specifically designed to create an optimal amount of back pressure in the engine. removing the converter will cause you to lose this and besides voiding any manufacturers warranty it could and probably will cause you to lose fuel mileage and a drop in horse power
Some older trucks dont have them, after a certain year they are required. There is a fine if you are caught without your cat, but who is going to check? When I removed mine, the muffler shop told me they couldn't do it when i was redoing my exhaust, so I cut it off myself at home, then took it up there without it.. they put my straight pipes on after that. Its not going to hurt your ride, will give it more power, but also will probably trigger your check engine light. check out www.voloperformance.com for a chip to help boost your HP.How much horsepower will i gain on a desiel by removing Catalytic converter?
You will NOT gain any power by doing this, if the truck is under warranty it will void the warranty.

It is illegal and it is a federal offense if you get caught.
if its stock little to none, but you will gain a lot when its burning off, along with more mpg.

How can I disconnect my catalytic converter Kia Optima 2006?

I want to disconnect my catalytic converter so my exhaust is richer in Carbon Monoxide. How can I disconnect my catalytic converter Kia Optima 2006?
well you got two choices you can cut it off all together and weld a spacer between and have the chance of failing an inspection or you can cut it off and beat the catalyic out and weld it back on fooling the mechanic that does the inspection and it will have deeper sound but it can be heard by a good mechanic
Can you say $10,000 fine or are you just not worried about that because the only reason anyone would want to do something like that is to commit suicide. I have been that low and I can tell you it will pass. Things always get better. I would strongly suggest therapy and maybe even some antidepressants. How can I disconnect my catalytic converter Kia Optima 2006?
You know if you do that you are breaking a federal law, right?
Breaking laws and such aside, you simply can't remove the catalytic converters on that car ... well, physically you can, but because the car is an OBDII car, it has an O2 sensor placed after the catalytic converter that will detect the absence of the unit, and turn on your check engine light. Intentionally removing your catalytic converter will, in most cases, void your warranty. Additionally, you'll see your fuel mileage go down, and there won't be much of a performance gain. How can I disconnect my catalytic converter Kia Optima 2006?
ask this in mental health section.
DO NOT DO THAT YOU ARE BREAKING LAWS YOU WILL BE CHARGED HEAVY FINE AND YOU CAN KILL YOURSELF FROM CARBON MONOXIDE
Not only is that illegal, it is dangerous. I cannot imagine why in the world you would want a higher concentration of CO. Unless you are so feeble minded that someone has led you to believe that that will somehow increase your car's performance (on a Kia-hahahahaha) then I must assume that you are a simpleton.

How much it cost to fix the O2 sensor and the catalytic converter 2002 Suzuki esteem car?

Car has 98k miles on it.How much it cost to fix the O2 sensor and the catalytic converter 2002 Suzuki esteem car?
o2 sensor shouldn't be too much, should fix that first. if you have to replace the cat converter, well, that's kinda pricey. How much it cost to fix the O2 sensor and the catalytic converter 2002 Suzuki esteem car?
These are two separate items. for the record the O2 sensor has nothing to do with the catalytic converter. smog check test for the amount of nitrates in the fuel and unburned fuel. The O2 sensor (there are two one in the intake one in exhaust) help the car manage the fuel mixture. The catalytic converter helps trap nitrates, this basically works liek a sponge once it's worn out it has to be replaced.

My suggest take the test and see why you failed. if it's because of nitrates then replace the converter, if its because of oxygen stuff then the O2 sensor if both replace both. Most places give you a break on the restest. How much it cost to fix the O2 sensor and the catalytic converter 2002 Suzuki esteem car?
o2 sensor can be under $100 if you can replace them yourself. the cat is going to be expensive cause of the metals they use inside them. one cat can cost you maybe $300-400 without the price of installing it
Fix the O2 sensor first. Then reset the computer and see if the check engine light comes back on. The computer uses info from the O2 sensors to monitor catalyst efficiency.

  • Is it a good idea to remove a catalytic converter from a vehicle to gain HP?

I just installed a Borla cat-back exhaust system on my 04 Hemi Ram. Does anyone recommend I remove my catalytic converter to improve HP and/or sound? Thanks. Is it a good idea to remove a catalytic converter from a vehicle to gain HP?
first off this procedure is more tricky than u want. i dont recomend it but i cant saymuch i removed it from both my dodges... yes it will improve sound alot. a whole lot no one can denie that. sumtimes it will make it louder though and not better depends on your muffler your using for sound other wise it wont sound good, just noise annoyingly and get you in trouble. some state's require the converter to pass its emissions testing so think about that as well. and also there is oxygen 02 sensors before and after the converter. the first one before the converter reads the fumes and will tell how rich it is so it will modify your fuel/air ratio so if its not working your truck will run a lil worse and will use a whole lot more gas. the second one will sniff to see if the readings are different so it tells if the converter is working or is on and it will set off check engine lights if they dont work. they do more than that but thats just a short break down of it. ull get worse gas mileage alot worse than u think. and might make it run different too. sum it wont affect how it runs sum it will. sum people try to put the sensors back in the straight pipe itself but then the rear one still needs to read diferent than the first so u might need a non fouler or sumthing like to make it give diferent readings to push it away from the fumes. of course they also add in the 02 bungs too., so i dont recomend it but i do it just cause i like the sound without it.Is it a good idea to remove a catalytic converter from a vehicle to gain HP?
no its a federal offense plus on top of that you won't be passing any emissions test with your truck (if you have emissions) on top of that you have O2 sensors placed throughout your exhaust reading your exhaust fumes O2 sensor A (before cat) needs to read different then O2 sensor B (after cat) if they don't equal out you will have a Check Engine Light on with an extremely rich exhaust the gas mileage will be HORRID. shal i go on?Is it a good idea to remove a catalytic converter from a vehicle to gain HP?
No. Not only is it a big federal offense (fine for getting caught is typically $10,000 - $25,000) but it makes no noticeable difference in performance. And of course the check engine light will stay lit with a P0420 code.
Just get an aftermarket hi flow cat

Could running a car without a plug wire attached cause the catalytic converter to become clogged?

My 95 Honda accord was running like crap and back firing. I had to be somewhere important. Now all 4 plugs are black, dry and sooty. Car will start then immediately stall. Do you think i killed the catalytic converter by driving half an hour like this. If yes are they difficult to install?Could running a car without a plug wire attached cause the catalytic converter to become clogged?
Yes by taking the converter loose You can tell that it is plugged up but by knocking the guts out of the converter and driving the car on the road is a violation of the law and can get You a BIG fine from the law.Could running a car without a plug wire attached cause the catalytic converter to become clogged?
Yes, If there is an ignition misfire, the fuel burns in the catalyst instead of the engine and overheats it. Take the exhaust loose/apart upstream of the Cat. or unscrew the oxygen sensor, if the car starts and runs now, the Cat. is plugged. You might get a universal Cat cheaper but you have to cut/weld. A stock Cat. will cost more but should just bolt on. If you just knock the guts out of your bad Cat. and put it back on, the car will run fine, but won't pass a smog test.Could running a car without a plug wire attached cause the catalytic converter to become clogged?
just replace plugs and yes they welded on most cars an dcost like 250 bucks but a few hours running wouldnt plugged one up takes a like 6 yrs
my plugs got black like that and my trouble was the 02 sensor.

    Catalytic Converter?

Why do people think it is bad to cut off the cat and replace it with a straight pipe. Other than the sound. It doesnt do anything to the motor does it.Catalytic Converter?
Well, the EPA is really hard on vehicle emissions. The Catalytic Converter helps out by reducing the amount of polutants that are created by burning gasoline. You could get fined for removing it and you risk not being able to pass your vehicle inspection. On another note, catalytic converters have a habit of collecting carbon deposits which in turn hinder your exhaust flow, causing loss of power and a warmer running engine.
It's bad because IT'S ILLEGAL!! Tampering with an emissions control device is a federal crime.Catalytic Converter?
In newer cars, yes. It does bad things to the environment, also. Not to mention that a spot inspection from the State Patrol or police will result in a $5000 fine. Are you that selfish moronic that you don't consider others?
Because it is illegal and it interferes with the cars emmissions.

If a car fails an emmissions test it fails its MOT.Catalytic Converter?
Were I live there Is no DEQ This means emissions test there for you can cut off your cat and not be eligal. So check local state laws before jumping the gun. The reason you should keep the cat besides the emisions quality is that it helps produce back presure Most people remove the cat thinking it will make them go faster when infact it does the oposite in ost cases. Alll you do is make the car louder. Reall HP. cost $$$ opeing up the exhaust Is only one step You must also increase the intake And fuel dilivery.
1,,,its there for the air...2.. it doesnt slow the car...3 its the law...
i think it should be the law ..

removing it improves mileage and power
    IT'S ILLEGAL!!

hey maybe it should have two. if its missing one your making the one that is there work to hard. My car has 4 catalytic converters.

I Have A 1994 Honda Accord , I Believe My Catalytic Converter Was Clogged Because It Was Running Like Trash , So I Cut A Few Holes In Tha Catalytic Converter For Better Breathing , It Runs Better , But It Will Stall Once I Park , So Are My Holes Not Big Enough ? Or Do I Also Have A Bad O2 Sensor ? Im Changing Tha Cat On Thursday And Possibly Tha O2 Sensor If Thats Also Bad . Please Dont Give Me Some Stupid Answers Like Why Did You Cut Holes In Your Cat , Um Hello Cuz It Wasnt Running Good ! ! ! Anyways Thanks For All Your Answers !Catalytic Converter?
Your car, like all other small cars, needs backpressure to run correctly. Backpressure is the force created by restrictions in your exhaust like the muffler and the catalytic converter and the actual size of the exhaust tubing. Your converter maybe clogged, but that is not going to hurt your cars performance that bad, if the O2 sensor is bad, it will tell the computer a false reading, so it will make your car run leaner it will run more air and less fuel in the mixture, ultimately running bad. Do you have a check engine light on? This can tell you if it is getting a bad reading. And if your changing the cat just go ahead and get the O2 sensor while your doing that.Catalytic Converter?
i would change them both and then see how it runs. that could be the problem, or it might be something more, but start with the things you know are bad before waisting money on other parts.

    Catalytic converter ?

Does knocking the honey combs out of the catalytic converter give you better gas mileage or does it just not matter?Catalytic converter ?
Hi,You might as well install a straight pipe back there. You will have no back pressure thus changing the whole operation of the car. Good LuckCatalytic converter ?
The honey combs are the entire point. You won't pass smog.

    And no.

    Catalytic Converter?

My check engine light came on. I took it to autozone and they did a diagnostic on it. It came up with a code saying that my catalytic converter is bad. It seems like an easy replacement, but will the replacement make my check engine light go off automatically if its fixed, or will I have to get it reset? and where?Catalytic Converter?
When you change the catalytic converter, if they don't reset the codes at that time, the light should go off in about 40-60 miles, when the computer realizes that it is no longer an active fault. It will still be listed as an inactive, or passive fault until it is cleared by a mechanic.Catalytic Converter?
You can reset it by removing the positive battery cable for about half an hour. When you replace it, start the car, and the light should be off.Catalytic Converter?
If that is what is causing your fault, then all you will need to do is take it back to autozone and they can clear you fault, or if you have someone change the cat then, they maybe able to clear it for you.
after you get it replaced, you have to have the codes erased.

    Catalytic converter ?

I have a 2000 vw passat and I think my catalytic converter is broken. I turned on my car one morning and my engine light came on but was flashing and smoke came out the exhaust. I turned off my car and never turned it back on. Its been two days since then. My question is it safe to drive my car?Catalytic converter ?
Im almost sure that your car wasn't producing smoke as you say! every morning all cars (especially if you are in a region with high humidity) produce apart from the smoke and some steam (it is the humidity that was on your exhaust). it is not used to see smoke caused from burned engine oil on the exhaust exactly after turning the engine on.

this model usually has problem with the lamda sensor. i think that when your fuel isnt good then this light is (on this model)
If the light is on then that means your cat is going bad, it is still drivable although it is illegal to, the whole purpose of a catalytic converter is for the reduction of exhaust pollutants. It will not harm your car if smoke is coming out of the exhaust, it just means that the catalytic isnt doing its job, just like diarrhea hehe, your big intestine isnt doing its job, but still comes out fine. My advice would be to replace it asap so your o2 sensors wont fry out from the bad smoke. It is fairly cheap to replace also, it cost me a littler over 200 for my Impreza, goodluck!Catalytic converter ?
You did yourself a big favor by turning the vehicle off right away (most people wouldn't) Any time the check engine light FLASHES on a 1996 and later vehicle it means that you have a misfire that is severe enough to damage the catalytic converter! And the most common thing on the VW to cause an overly rich mixture is a ruptured fuel pressure regulator diaphragm allowing raw fuel to be sucked into the intake manifold. This is a lot cheaper fix than replacing the converter (About $1800.00 for a new converter on this vehicle)
good job!! that is exactly what to do, turn the car off, and call the repair shop (I sure hope you have triple AAA if not, I suggest you get it if your car is more than a few years old, it will save you money in the long run I promise. Your mechanic needs to check out the car and diagnose the problem, I have answered several questions in the last several days where check engine lights come on, and they kept driving, and then something went really wrong and the car stopped in the middle of the freeway, when they should have turned the car off when the engine check lights pop on.

This is what check lights are for. Do not drive the car. ask a friend for a lift somewhere. best of luck.Catalytic converter ?
Try again. A bad cat doesn't cause smoke...

Is it safe to drive? No. Because it's probably a hefty mechanical problem if it's oil smoke could be blow by, if it's thick white smoke it's either a head gasket or possible a crack at the intake manifold.
A cylinder could have failed due to a faulty injector or a head might be cracked. do not drive , do not pass go or collect $200 get it towed to a shop.
Suggest you have towed to VW and get checked, sounds like something blew. If you've got comp. car ins. they'll reimburse tow. I don't think it wise to try starting again.
If your light was flashing it means DO NOT DRIVE, do not start the car, get it towed and checked out. There is no leeway when the light flashes.
you can drive without it. you will just be putting out a little smoke
