These are two separate items. for the record the O2 sensor has nothing to do with the catalytic converter. smog check test for the amount of nitrates in the fuel and unburned fuel. The O2 sensor (there are two one in the intake one in exhaust) help the car manage the fuel mixture. The catalytic converter helps trap nitrates, this basically works liek a sponge once it's worn out it has to be replaced.



My suggest take the test and see why you failed. if it's because of nitrates then replace the converter, if its because of oxygen stuff then the O2 sensor if both replace both. o2 sensor can be under $100 if you can replace them yourself. the cat is going to be expensive cause of the metals they use inside them. one cat can cost you maybe $300-400 without the price of installing it
Fix the O2 sensor first. Then reset the computer and see if the check engine light comes back on. The computer uses info from the O2 sensors to monitor catalyst efficiency.
