Catalytic Converter?

OK I think I made a mistake. I went to a radiator muffler shop because it sounded like I had a hole in my muffler. They were going to charge me $20 to repair it. I told them sounds good. But then he offered to remove my Catalytic Converter so that he could keep it and he wouldn't charge me anything. How bad of a mistake did i make?Catalytic Converter?
What, you let the guy take off your cat and just KEEP it?! He didn't replace it?

Holy cats!

That's like, a violation of emissions laws! The cat is REQUIRED EQUIPMENT on your car. He's going to turn around and sell the cat for $100 to some schmo who doesn't know a new from a used one, or just sell the cat to a reclaimer for the rare metals inside.

The dude's ripping you off - sic the Better Business Bureau, the EPA, and maybe Uncle Louie on him!
Well the catalytic converter is used to reduce the toxicity of emissions from the engine, with the compliance from the EPA of reugualtions on exhaust and its emissions you did make a mistake by letting him take it becuase now your vehicle pollutes big time.Catalytic Converter?
You really got screwed not only will your car not pass an emissions test but if you get caught without it you are going to get a ticket worth about the last i heard was 1000 dollars but that is not likely but it wont pass an emissions test you were better off just fixing it
you got riped off... that converter contains platnun and if it were good why take it off.. now when you go to inspection you will not pass emissions.. i would call the better business bureat about this act.. you gave him permission because you trusted him.. and he led you the wrong way..this is called a confidence man..Catalytic Converter?
You got screwed.

A replacement Cat Converter can be as cheap as $200 (parts) or as much as $850 (parts - mostly German cars).

Go back there and demand it be put back. Or sue them and they may get shut down for letting leave without cat converter (serious emission violation).

Good Luck.
The guy just took you. You were *** raped! CATS can go for $150 at a scrap yard! I would go back and demand that he make it right or call the Better Business Beauro..
It also could have been a favor? -- Your problem may have well been that your converter was empty or had what is known as a "bisket" inside of it causing the noise and possible poor performance. The honeycomb inside of a converter is worth about $25 a pound. If it was broke I would be suprised if it had a pound left in it.... So -- apples for apples -- if your not in an emission county -- I wouldn't worry about it.... Or you could go pay him $20 and get your bisket back.... Good Luck
go to firestone and stop trying to fix it ur damn self
You got royally screwed on that one.
Call the cops.
