What happens if they catch me with out a catalytic converter?

I live in Chicago ill and I have a 1996 Honda Accord and I removed my catalytic converter and was wondering if i will pass the emission test because i dont have the check engine light on and if they catch me without one what will they do?What happens if they catch me with out a catalytic converter?
A year ago it might be no big deal. This year or next you can bet it will be a big deal indeed. Besides Illinois fines the EPA will want a bite of you, and the last I heard they want $25K for an unauthorized change to a vehicle emission system. Don't worry about jail - that is just there to make sure you pay the fine no matter how many years it takes you to pay it off.



In the past year every regulatory agency I deal with at work - US Forest Service, FCC, OSHA, EPA, Highway Patrol - has stepped up enforcement and all are quite candid that it is to collect fees and fines at every possible opportunity. The EPA knows there are enough illegally modified vehicles out there to ease their budget problems and you can bet there are going to be lots of surprise inspections coming Real Soon Now. They would be incredibly stupid not to, and they are not incredibly stupid.

Champ is right. The fine is hefty. I have seen some people keep the converter housing and run a straight piece of pipe through it. Either way, it's very risky and can cost you more in the end.

No you will not. Illinois does the engine light test AND the dyno emission test. If they find you don't have a cat on your car, they will not pass you.
$10,000 fine and without it you WON'T pass an emissions test guaranteed.
The last time I checked it was a $10,000 fine and up to 2 years in prison.
