When does a catalytic converter need to be replaced on a 2000 Honda civic lx?

My check engine light is on and at 79,600miles the mechanic said I need to replace the catalytic converter and O2 sensors in my civic. I feel like this should not be breaking on my car already. I have only had it 8 months and the quote to fix it is really expensive.|||get your car to a honda dealer immediately. the catalytic converter is covered for 8 years or 80,000 miles whichever comes first. you're 400 miles short of the expiration of the warranty, so get to the dealer before your warranty expires or you'll be in for an expensive repair.

the warranty is on the car, not on the owner, so it doesn't matter if you're the original owner or not.

I doubt you need to replace both the converter and the 02 sensor. there is no causal relationship between the two. the Honda dealer will tell you there is a charge to do the diagnostic to determine if it is the converter or not. if it is the converter there should be no charge for diagnosis. if it is something else then you'll have to pay for the diagnosis.

take it to the honda dealer asap.|||Depends on engine running condition. If engine is well tuned up, cat would last 150K or more. If you haven't changed the spark plug %26amp; wires in past 60,000, but it my just go out anytime after 60K.

And if you have coolant leak into exhaust line, it kills O2 sensors and after that, it cat goes out within few hundreds miles.

Proper sequence of repair is:

Replace Spark Plugs and wires (if not done at 60K)

Replace First O2 sensor

Replace Cat with 2nd O2 sensor

I bet you that the check engine light would go out after the spark plug + wires replacement. If you have been driving long time with the check engine light, then you maight need to replace the O2 sensor and Cat.|||when your check engine light comes on and you get an emmisions code for a cat converter most likley you will have rust and decay of the cat back system somewhere and you will never pass a state insp. if you dont get it replaced. If you think you are being bamboozooled ask for the report of the paper work that says what it is and have them show you the bad part they have too.

Cost : you are looking at least 800.00 dollars in parts labor and shop supplies...........

i used to work at honda fyi.....
